Dr. Murty is a unique combination of expertise in both geophysical technologies and software technologies. He has experience and expertise in most aspects of seismic data acquisition, processing and quantitative seismic interpretation integrating all available G&G data. Specialized in providing timely solutions for seismic data acquisition, processing and interpretation for which no direct solutions exist(ed) in the (then) commercial software through innovative workflows and induction of new technologies through R&D efforts and software development for which he was awarded National Mineral Award in 2001. He has command on most of the commercial G&G software used in oil industry and guided several software development projects and received ‘Copyright’ from Govt. of India for his Dip Azimuth Transformation software (DATS).
He carried many special studies including velocity modeling, AVO and seismic inversion, attribute analysis, correlation with petrophysical properties and reservoir characterization, improved imaging in thrust belt area through use of passive seismic tomography derived velocities, feasibility study for multi-component data acquisition and processing in Kuthalam area, integration of Sea Bed Logging (SBL) data with well log and seismic impedance to derive porosity and gas saturation in a deep water block etc., leading to value addition in hydrocarbon exploration in challenging areas.
Some of the innovative techniques inducted and software modules developed by him include Coherency time-dip and azimuth cubes (DATS), ‘TuningCube’ (spectral decomposition), RGB Color Mapping of Spectral Components, Quantitative approach for QC of seismic data for acquisition and processing, Correction of acquisition foot-prints and processing workflows for time-lapse study (4D) of Neelam area, methodology and software for re-orienting 3D data and merging of multiple 3D data sets of different orientations and bin sizes, solution to post-stack cross-line static problems through innovative correlation time surface, pre-planning of 3D survey in logistically difficulty areas, forward modeling of seismic data using massively parallel processing GPU technology with CUDA, conversion of angle gathers to offset gathers, Landmark project data import to Petrel etc.,
He has in depth knowledge of software development kits of commercial software and many of the modules developed were integrated as Plugins to OpenWorks/SeisWorks, Western Geco/OMEGA, Petrel.
He published several papers and received Gold Medal for best paper in Geohorizons, SPG-2008 and C&MD Award for professional paper 2000, presented at SPE Brisbane. He imparted technical skills and developed operational competence to hundreds of geoscientists and familiarized interpretation on workstations. He also worked for standardization of seismic-related data for application-independent interoperability and delivered lecture on the proliferation of seismic standards at Geophysics SIG 2009, Energistics, Houston. Conducted regular trainings on “Pre and Post stack time & depth migration, velocity modeling” at ONGC Academy, Dehradun. Delivered the Continuing Education Course “Seismic Interferometry, Passive Seismics” at SPG, Kochi 2013. He is a member of Doctoral committee, IRS, Anna University, Chennai and evaluated Doctoral thesis from Banaras Hindu University.
